Why have my own "social" network of one? A few reasons:

  • It's fun. I get to run things in my own playground with cool software.
  • It's nice to have a public space where I can post things without worrying that it will go away when Media Company A buys Media Company B, or when we all move to the next shiny social media thing.
  • I think social media sites are like restaurants. There are giant fast-food places that have a consistent menu, are available everywhere, and serve bland, market-tested food. There are also small hole-in-the-wall places that nobody knows about and that serve interesting and delicious things that you won't find anywhere else. We need more of the latter.
